I was reading an issue of Time Magazine lately.  It was the April 20, 2009 issue.  On the cover it read “Don’t be Depressed:  It’s a Great Time for Web Start-Ups.“  Of course an article like that caught my eye as that’s what I do; I help people make money from home with home based businesses of their own, right?

So I bought the magazine and took it home.  Inside there was an article entitled “Get Rich Slow.  Surprise: there’s never been a better moment to bootstrap your own Internet business.  All you need is a laptop, a broadband connection and a great idea.  Inside the new start-up boom.”

There was a section in that article I wanted to share with you.  It read:

How to Start a Start-Up

1. Find a Co-founder.

Start-up muse Paul Graham says most successful start-ups are collaborative.  Going it alone is usually a “recipe for disaster,” he says.  Find someone whose skills complement your own.

Comment:  In the network marketing industry you have a whole support group available of other distributors.  In fact, they’re motivated financially to see you succeed.

2. Find a problem to work on.

Says Graham: “When I’m trying to help would-be founders come up with ideas, I ask them, ‘What do you wish existed that doesn’t?  What’s currently broken?’”  That’s where great product ideas come from.

Comment:  This is where you “find a need and fill it”.

3. Launch something simple quickly.

The faster you get your site up, the sooner you’ll get a sense of what’s working and what’s not.  Start with your friends - and hope they tell their friends.

Comment:  The only thing that is going to make you money is a customer.  So put up enough to get a customer.  The site won’t be perfect.  But as time goes on, you’ll improve it.

4. Iterate rapidly in response to users’ reactions.

Building a site these days is easier than it used to be.  Make changes daily.

5.  Meanwhile, be cheap.

Graham likes to say that great start-ups are like coackroaches: “Cockroaches are hard to kill.  A company can be hard to kill by not needing much mney.  The less money you need, the harder it is to run out.”

Comment: Focus on what will make you money from home.  That will keep your spending in check.  If it isn’t needed right now to make more sales, look at it later.

There are a lot of news reports talking about the swine flu outbreak.  Vice President Joe Biden went on television yesterday morning to discuss the flu problem.  He said that he personally would not recommend that anyone travel in closed quarters like on airplanes, trains or buses. Traveling in closed quarters could increase your odds of being contaminated by the swine flu.

Later that same day, the Vice President took a lot of heat from the airline industry.  They said that creating fear will result in no one flying in airplanes.  When that happens, the airline industry  collapses.

So what do you do?

Well, how about building a business from home?

Start making money at home.  There is no better way to avoid the flu than working out of your house with your own home business.

Managerial incompetence means that the people running the businesses don’t know what they’re doing. And here are the two critical areas of managerial incompetence that cause business failure.

First is sales and marketing. 48 percent of businesses that fail in America fail because the business cannot sell enough of its products or services. Very few businesses fail when they have high levels of sales and revenues coming in.

Control Your Costs
The second reason that businesses fail, 46 percent, is because of poor cost control. They may be selling enough on the front end, but they’re losing so much on the back end that they go broke anyway. Sales and marketing, financing and cost control, both require experience. And if you’re serious about becoming financially independent, you have to learn how to do both of these.

Put Luck On Your Side
You must learn the skills you need to be successful. Business success is not a matter of luck. Business success is a matter of application. It’s a matter of ability. It’s a matter of experience and skill and intelligence, and wonderfully enough, you can learn what you need to know to be successful. And you can start by learning through on-the-job training, which is called OJT. Most successful businesspeople become successful because they get all their training by working for someone else.

Here are two things you can do immediately to make sure that your business succeeds greatly:

First, take the time to get the knowledge and experience you need in business by working for someone else where you can learn a lot in a short period of time. Go to work in an area in which you are interested and learn everything you possibly can.

Second, read and study in business, especially entrepreneurial business, all the time. Read one or two business books per week and read every business magazine that is published on your subject. Never stop learning and growing.

I was reading the book Making The Impossible Possible by Jason Boreyko today.  In his book, Boreyko describes his “secret of success” as:

“..my ability to develop ‘belief structures’ that help me achieve all of my dreams and goals.  Every goal I have set and pursued with passion have come true.”

The Wristband Slap

Wearing wristbands for various causes has become pretty popular these days.  I was watching a news reporter describe how he was trying to become more positive in his outlook on life.  So every time he said something negative or had a negative thought, he would pop his wristband to slap himself for thinking the negative thought.

He said it was hard at first to be positive.  He was constantly slapping himself at the wrist.  But after about 3 weeks, he had a totally different outlook on life and things really began to happen for him.

I just read an article written by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki published in the Your Business magazine.  In that article, Donald Trump describes why you should consider a network marketing home based business opportunity as a way to make money from home.  Trump write:

“There are many benefits the network marketing industry offers those who want more from their lives.”

Today I read a great article at TheStreet.com that talked about the 10 reasons why you’re not rich.  I think you’ll find this article insightful for yourself if you’re still not where you want to be when it comes to making money from home or at your J.O.B.

#1.  You Care About The Looks of Your Car. Let’s face it, your car is simply transportation.  But for many of us, it much more than that.  Instead, you see the car as a reflection of you.  So instead of putting your money elsewhere, you pick up a new car every couple of years or so.
